A traveling band of gypsy performers, with a macabre "mock hanging" act, are hired to do a private show by the reclusive Count Drago. They are summoned to his castle, which is filled with the lifeless bodies of all types of animals - the results of Drago's research with instantaneous preservation. Tragedy befalls the performers when the show goes horribly wrong, resulting in the death of their leader. Stranded in the castle, the remaining members are horrified to learn that the Count wants much more from them than just a show!

Christopher Lee is at his creepy best in this eerie and atmospheric thriller, which is also notable for being Donald Sutherland's first substantial film work. Sutherland plays three diverse parts in the film, and is reputed to have named his son Kiefer after the film's director, in gratitude for being given his big break.
