(a.k.a. White Trash On Moonshine Mountain)
Country-western singing star Doug Martin jets off to the Carolina hill country on a mission: to experience the life of the mountain folk first-hand, so that his songs may ring true with authenticity. He plans to live among the locals, eat their food, wear their clothes and learn their ways. Well, what he finds is a clan of rowdy moonshiners and backwoods troglodytes. But these hill people have an odd charm, kindly accepting Doug into their fold, and soon he finds himself attracted to Laura, a pert college student among the folk. Things get dicey when his uppity high society girlfriend Della arrives on the scene from New York City. While returning to the airport after a fight with Doug, Della crosses paths with the lecherous county sheriff. Rape, murder and mayhem ensue, forcing a climatic confrontation between the crooked law officer and the folk. Filmmaker Herschell Gordon Lewis is better known for his pioneering low-budget gore efforts, such as Blood Feast and Model Massacre, but in this film he puts aside the buckets of blood and tries his hand at camp comedy. The result is an entertaining and strangely endearing piece of trash cinema, featuring plenty of fancy guitar-picking and catchy authentic Southern country music. |
