Professor Roche, a brilliant scientist, toils to learn the secrets of atomic power in his manor at the edge of the sea. One stormy night, he and his assistant are kidnapped by an evil businessman, Artigas. Taken by submarine to Artigas' volcano headquarters, Roche is tricked into developing his experiment for evil intentions. The scientist’s assistant, Simon, struggles all the while to free himself so that he may warn Roche before disaster ensues.

Director Karel Zeman creates a magical fantasy world, utilizing puppetry, animation and photographic effects - all based on lithographs from original Jules Verne texts and combined with live actors - to create "Mysti-Mation": a cinematic experience that is unique by any standards!
